Farm art wins Rep. Axne's Congressional Art Contest!

Allison Su, a junior at Ankeny Centennial High School, is the winner of the 2020 Congressional Art Competition for Iowa’s Third Congressional District. Represenative Cindy Axne (IA-03) announcing that Su’s oil pastel painting entitled “Peaceful Farm Afternoons” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

“Congratulations to Allison – you have represented your school and your community well, and I look forward to seeing your artwork displayed in the Capitol this coming year. I was incredibly impressed with the creativity, thoughtfulness, and talent of Iowa’s high school students that submitted works to this year’s art competition – including our second and third place finishers Kai and Jaeni,” said Rep. Axne. “All the young artists’ amazing submissions made it a very close contest this year, and I am grateful to all of them for showcasing their work.”

A panel of 7 artists and art professionals from across Iowa’s Third Congressional District assisted in choosing the winner. The panelists were:  

  • Trish Bergren, Director at the Clarinda Carnegie Art Museum in Clarinda
  • Laura Burkhalter– Des Moines Art Center Director of Education
  • Buck Christensen – Christensen Photography in Council Bluffs
  • Zach Jones - Mills County Project Art Church in Malvern
  • Jenny Kruger, Dean of the Iowa Western Community College Art Department in Council Bluffs 
  • Siobhan Spain, Director of Mainframe Studios in Des Moines
  • State Rep. Ray Sorenson, State Representative and muralist in Fontanelle
