Tama County Fair Cancels Completely

Although many county fairs across the state are holding modified youth livestock shows and static project judging events in lieu of a traditional county fair experience, Tama county was not so lucky.

According to a press release from Tama County Extension and Outreach, multiple fair leaders and extension staff members were notified of a possible COVID-19 exposure on July 11th. The next day, the fair was officially cancelled. The Tama County Fair was originally planned to be held July 13th through the 19th in Gladbrook.

Within the release, Fair Board President Matt Jackson explained the difficult decision. “It is unfortunate that we had to make this decision, but our priority is to protect those who live and work in Tama county and to help stop the spread of COVID-19. We will be back in 2021 and look forward to resuming the great Tama County Fair.”

According to Executive Director, ISU Extension and Outreach Tama County, Cheryl Bruene, communication and horticulture exhibits were judged before the indicated COVID-19 exposure. They still occurred in a modified format.

As of this week, nine modified county fairs are occurring in Benton, Bremer, Butler, Cass, Des Moines, Dubuque, Humboldt, Jefferson, Jackson, Johnson, Linn, Mitchell, Plymouth, Story, and Warren counties, according to the Association of Iowa Fairs website.
