Drake Relays Director hidden talent & 2019 NCAA Men's Basketball back in Des Moines! (Bonnie's blog 4/19/2017)

Meet Blake Bolden, the new Drake Relays Director and the first Iowan in that position!  Blake says all is ready for the legendary Drake Relays next week.  They have added a 400 meter hurdles for both the high school boys and girls this year.  Blake told us there will be over 70 olympians at this years relays!  There will be the traditional party on Court Avenue as well as the pole vault competition in Capital Square next Wednesday evening.  Tickets are still available for all sessions.  For more information or to get tickets, go to www.drakerelays.org.  By the way, Blake is one of only four native Iowans to run a mile in under 4 minutes!

Chris Connelly from the Iowa Events Center talked with us this morning about the big news that came out yesterday afternoon...the 2019 1st and 2nd round NCAA Men's Basketball games are coming back to downtown Des Moines.  Drake University will be the sponsoring team.  This means there is a chance for Iowa, Iowa State and/or University of Northern Iowa to play right here in Des Moines!  Chris said the new convention hotel will be finished in the spring of 2018 and the skywalks put back together at that time as well...so all should be great by March of 2019.  Tickets will go on sale in the spring of next year.

Simon Conway joined us in the studio this morning to talk about the live show he will be doing this Thursday afternoon from 4-7PM at the 5th Annual Special Reception and Silent Auction in support of the Puppy Jake Foundation.  There will be food and drink, a silent auction and an on-line auction (which is going on now).  The event is tomorrow from 6-8PM at Sticks Studio, 3631 SW 61st Street in Des Moines. Puppy Jake Foundation provides service dogs for wounded military veterans.  For more information, go to Facebook.com/PuppyJakeFoundation.

Tomorrow on Van and Bonnie, Chris Coleman, City Councilman and of the Better Business Bureau, will join us in the studio.  Also, we'll give you two chances to win $1,000 in our "Make Your Wallet Great Again" as well as another pair of tickets to Daryl Hall & John Oates concert coming on May 7th!

Stay dry!
