Email phishing scheme exposes 800 Iowans' info

(Des Moines, Iowa)   The Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) is contacting more than 800 Iowans, who may have had their confidential information exposed in an email phishing scheme.

The D-H-S says the agency was targeted Monday.  Hackers tricked nine employees into giving their passwords, and hackers got access to their email accounts.

The scam was discovered the same day, and passwords were changed.

The DHS has no evidence hackers accessed any of the exposed emails, but as a precaution they'll be notifying those potentially affected by mail.

The DHS will provide up to a year of credit monitoring at no charge.

If you suspect your identity has been stolen, contact your local enforcement officials or call the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-888-777-4590.
