Driver hits 250-pound bear on I-80 near Victor, Iowa

(Poweshiek County, Iowa)   A Texas man, driving on I-80 last (Thursday) night in Poweshiek County struck and killed a black bear.

The Iowa State Patrol says it happened around 9:30 p.m. near Victor, Iowa, at the I-80 mile marker 204.

Authorities say the driver of the van, Ryk Vanravenswaay,  ended up in the north ditch.  He was not injured, but the vehicle had to be towed away.

The male black bear weighed about 250 pounds.  Authorities believe it's the same bear that had been spotted numerous times this fall in Poweshiek County.  The carcass was removed and will be examined by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
