DES MOINES, IOWA - While most of us were asleep very early Sunday morning, Des Moines firefighters fought a house fire on the north side of town.

The 911 call came a few minutes before 5:00 a.m. for a house fire in the 19-hundred block of Washington Avenue, just east of Martin Luther King Junior Parkway.

Flames were visible in the basement and first floor.  According to dispatch audio, firefighters reported finding no one inside after two searches of all three floors of the house.

Des Moines Fire Department Lieutenant Rick Thomas tells WHO Radio News that the fire started in the basement, where an explosion was reported, but the exact cause is still being investigated.  He says no injuries were reported.
