Meredith adding jobs in Des Moines, cutting in New York

(DES MOINES, Iowa)  Des Moines-based Meredith Corporation plans to add 200 jobs at its headquarters. The announcement is part of several steps announced Wednesday by the media giant.

Meredith acquired Time Inc. in January, has done a portfolio review and now plans to sell off some of the recently acquired magazines, and cut 1,200 jobs.  Most of the jobs are in New York.

Meredith Spokesman Art Sluzark tells WHO Radio News, no layoffs are planned in Des Moines.  He says the staff reductions in New York are needed to avoid duplication in several departments, including finance, information technology, human resources, legal, and in departments more closely related to the production of magazines.

Sluzark says Meredith wants to keep some of the publications they recently bought, including People, Real Simple, Cooking Light, and In Style.   The company is considering selling Time, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, and Money.
