Heavy rain in Des Moines, heavy snow to east and north

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Winter Storm Warning is out for parts of eastern Iowa Saturday with up to 10 inches of snow expected.  In the Des Moines area, heavy rain is likely tonight, with some snow possible Saturday.

WHO Channel 13 meteorologist Jeriann Ritter says a big storm is set to hit Iowa tonight through tomorrow.

Rain is expected to begin this afternoon and evening and continue all night and into Saturday. Over 1″ of rain will fall in some places across central and southern Iowa. Thunderstorms will be possible.

Colder air across far NE Iowa into southern portions of Minnesota and Wisconsin will allow for snow to develop and accumulate through Saturday. This is where travel will be the trickiest over the weekend. Winter storm warnings are in effect starting tonight with 4-8″ possible by Saturday and strong winds.

Sunday looks drier across central Iowa, but there are more rain chances through the beginning of next week.
