Iowa once again to have a woman on the Iowa Supreme Court

It looks like Iowa will once again have a woman on the state Supreme Court.

Justice Bruce Zager retires in September, and the state Judicial Nominating Commission sifted through the candidates, picking three women as finalists for the job.

They're nominating Susan Christensen, a district court judge in Harlan, Terri Combs, a West Des Moines attorney, and Kellyann Lekar, a district court judge in Waterloo.

Governor Kim Reynolds has 30 days to decide which of the three she'll nominate to the vacant seat.

The last time a woman was on the Iowa Supreme Court was in 1993 when Marsha Turnus was appointed to the court and became Chief Justice.  She was thrown out, as were two other justices on the high court in 2010, in part for their decision that legalized gay marriage in the state.

15 of the 22 applicants for the open seat on the Iowa Supreme Court this year were women.
