Tornado ravages northern Marshalltown

Marshalltown Police are scheduling a news conference for 10am Friday to update the public on the recovery from a dangerous tornado that whipped through the area Thursday afternoon.

Alliant Energy said the storm ripped up transmission lines and facilities that needed to be fixed before service could be restored to many homes an businesses.  In addition, there were a number of power lines down and laying in the street that needed to be tended to first.

The American Red Cross set up a temporary shelter for residents impacted by the tornado Thursday.  It's located at the Meskwaki Conference Center at Meskwaki Casino and Hotel in Tama.

Marshalltown Police spent the night without a police station.  It was evacuated when the tornado hit and sustained damage.

Unity Point Hospital had to be evacuated and patients taken elsewhere after the building sustained damage and a gas leak was reported in the area.

National Weather Service crews will be in the area Friday to assess the strength of the tornado. However, it was the first time in many years they issued a "tornado emergency" for the town because of the power of the tornado.
