Floods stall Iowa DOT salt and sand restocking

AMES, Iowa -- Mississippi and Missouri River flooding is making it difficult to get winter salt and sand supplies into parts of the Midwest.

"On the Mississippi barge traffic was hindered quite a bit due to flooding." Says Iowa Department of Transportation Winter Operations Administrator Craig Bargfrede

"Then over in the southwestern part of the state, couldn't make deliveries until a lot of the water receded and roads were back into shape to get trucks." Bargfrede says.

Despite the delivery challenges and some delays getting the necessary winter road supplies, Bargfrede says Iowa DOT sheds across the state are now full of sand and salt, and are ready for winter.
