Ames Police using new Facebook Alerts

AMES, Iowa -- The Ames Police Department's using Facebook to make emergency alerts.

"When we put something out, we don't really control how it gets delivered to you. When we put out something critical, you may not see it for a couple of hours. With the Alerts, it pushes that notification out faster to everybody" says Police Cmdr. Geoff Huff.

He says the new Facebook Alerts will automatic be sent to people's phones and other mobile devices if they're in Ames, even if they don't follow the police department on social media.

Huff says they'll use the Alerts to notify the public of road closures, snow emergencies, and more serious issues like active shooter situations.
