Iowa Business survey finds post-pandemic optimism

(Des Moines, IA) -- The Iowa Business Council's latest survey is suggesting the state's larger employers are expecting a strong economy this year. Joe Murphy says 65-percent of their member surveyed expect sales to be higher during the next six months. The survey also finds most businesses will maintain capital spending and 55-percent expect to increase hiring. Murphy says an ongoing concern continues to be a struggle to find qualified workers in Iowa, which enjoys a low unemployment rate. Murphy says attracting a workforce continues to be the number one challenge.

The IBC notes while capital spending projections remain positive, the index fell to 56.25. The majority of respondents expect no change in this category. Murphy says it implies a pragmatic, wait-and-see approach as Iowa’s business community surpasses the one-year anniversary of the pandemic.

Murphy also notes there have been many good lessons learned throughout the pandemic. He expects some of the pandemic mitigation strategies to continue after the pandemic, including socially distanced work-stations and other measures.
