(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- An Iowa City man police say tossed a loaded gun and drugs from a car, during a traffic stop is going to federal prison. Thirty-three-year-old Donte Kent admitted he was in a car pulled over in Linn County June 27, 2020. He admits tossing a loaded pistol and 28-crack cocaine packages out the window during the traffic stop. Kent, who has previous convictions for domestic abuse assault, felony crack distribution, and felon in possession of a firearm, has been sentenced to 15-years in prison.
Kent pleaded guilty in May of this year to one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance after a prior felony drug conviction and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). PSN is the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts. PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them. As part of this strategy, PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
