Iowa DNR Tracking Elusive, Gray Fox

(Undated) -- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources wants to hear about any sightings of the gray fox. Wildlife Biologist Vince Evelsizer says they know gray fox numbers have been declining in the Midwest and in Iowa, but they're not sure why. The DNR is asking those who might have seen one either in person or on a trail cam to contact them. Those who encounter a dead fox are also asked to contact the DNR.

The DNR says the gray fox is smaller than coyotes and red foxes. Adult gray foxes typically weigh 10 – 12 lbs. They are mostly gray with patches of reddish, tan fur down the side of their neck and body. A distinct black line extends down the top of their tail. The face also has distinct black and white markings. The gray fox also has the ability to climb trees.

Sightings can be reported to:

Vince Evelsizer: vince.evelsizer@dnr.iowa.gov

Dr. Rachel Ruden (Iowa DNR Wildlife Veterinarian): rachel.ruden@dnr.iowa.gov
