(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- A former Dubuque postal clerk has been sentenced to more than two years in federal prison for mail theft. Amy Jurisic pleaded guilty in June of this year to stealing more than $650,000 in checks in 2017 and 2018. Evidence showed she gave the checks to someone in Chicago who was part of a check-cashing operation. Investigators say 62-thousand was actually deposited into bank accounts. Other checks were flagged and not processed.

Evidence at the sentencing hearing showed that Jurisic stole over 60 pieces of mail that contained checks made out to a Dubuque business. The check-cashing operation would then change the names on the check and attempt to deposit the checks into various bank accounts.

Jurisic was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams. Jurisic was sentenced to 33 months’ imprisonment. She was ordered to make more than $62,000 in restitution to victims. She must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
