(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- Some downtown Cedar Rapids streets, that were closed due to some un-safe scaffolding are now back-open. Crews yesterday (Wednesday) spotted scaffolding on the US Bank at 222 2nd Avenue SE had come loose due to high winds.
Based on the contractors’ initial investigation, the scaffolding anchoring on the 12th floor had become disengaged from the structure and posed a potential risk of failure. Crews blocked streets and sidewalks near the building, including 1st Avenue East, and some portions of buildings in the area were vacated as a precaution.
“The general contractor recognized a potential safety concern with the scaffolding and cooperated with several City departments to efficiently mitigate the concern,” said Building Services Director Kevin Ciabatti. “We appreciate the contractor’s fast action, as well as the cooperation of the general public and businesses in the area impacted by sidewalk and road closures while proper assessments and efforts were employed to safely secure the scaffolding.”
Repairs have been made and sidewalks and streets have reopened.
There was no damage to the US Bank building or surrounding buildings. No injuries were reported.
