(Grimes, IA) -- A fast-growing Des Moines suburb has outgrown it's once, small-town public library. Grimes is planning a new $8.5 million dollar library. Director Cheryl Heid says the current 6,500 square foot library was built in 1994. The New building will be much larger, 22,300 square feet.
Heid says the new building will have two main floors, and a mezzanine level for teens. It also features more space for work, study, more public computers a meeting room, large children's area and 25,000 new items for the library's collection. She says the current facility is struggling to meet the demands of the growing community. Grimes' population is 18,000. It's projected to reach 45-thousand by the year 2040.
A ground-breaking is planned for this spring. The new Grimes Public Library is scheduled to open sometime in the fall of 2023.
