Man Faces Attempted Murder Charge In Cedar Rapids Shooting

(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- A man's facing multiple charges stemming from a Cedar Rapids shooting. Police say 42-year-old Damian Johnson is charged with Attempted Murder and other charges. Police say he's accused of shooting 46-year-old Shawn Kelly in the leg June 25th last year in the 5000 block of 1st Avenue West. Investigators say the two men had argued in the parking lot behind an apartment complex and shots were fired. A short time later Kelly arrived at a Cedar Rapids hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. Police say it was determined the argument was over Kelly's estranged wife. Kelly was treated and released from the hospital.

Police arrested Johnson in Gary, Indiana December 9th. He's now in the Linn County Jail.

As a result of the investigation, arrest warrants were issued for Damian Johnson on charges of Attempted Murder, Willful Injury, Going Armed with Intent, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. On December 9, 2021, Damian Johnson was arrested in Gary, Indiana, on the outstanding warrants in Iowa and held for extradition. He was ultimately brought back to Iowa and served with the arrest warrants on January 11, 2022, at the Linn County Jail.
