Cats Treated For Burns After Fire at Des Moines Homeless Camp

(Des Moines, IA) -- The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is treating three cats, injured in a fire in Des Moines. The A-R-L says the cats suffered severe burns in a fire last week in a homeless encampment. The A-R-L says it will take months for the cats to recover.

The ARL says the cats have burns extending from their paws and legs to their faces. Pieces of plastic had melted into their fur and paws. Their coats were singed, their whiskers had burned off, and they were covered in soot.

Veterinarians have started the cats on pain medications and antibiotics and fluids, and wounds have been treated and wrapped.

The ARL says the cats will likely need surgery to remove dead tissue and help their wounds heal.
