(Des Moines, IA) -- The National Weather Service says southeast Iowa will bare the brunt of a storm rolling through Iowa late tonight into tomorrow (Thursday) morning. Forecasters say some areas could get a light glazing of ice and at least one inch of snow. Far southeast Iowa could receive more than a few inches of snow. A winter weather advisory will be in effect for about a dozen counties in southeast Iowa, starting at 9 p.m. and continuing until 6 p.m. Thursday. Lee County Iowa will be under a winter storm warning starting at midnight.

Forecasters say rain, sleet and freezing rain could start late this evening and into the early hours of Thursday before transitioning over to snow. Travelers are urged to keep up with both the forecast and road conditions.

Northern, central and east central Missouri as well as western and southwest Illinois will be under a winter storm warning starting at 3 a.m. Thursday. Some areas could receive up to five inches of snow and sleet. Areas farther south, near St. Louis, MO could heavy amounts of rain, raising the risk of localized flooding.

The NWS is reminding rivers that roads, especially bridges and overpasses will likely be slick and hazardous, starting Thursday morning and continuing throughout the day into Thursday night.
