NWS Confirms Six Tornados In Iowa Saturday

(Des Moines, IA) -- The National Weather Service has confirmed six tornados in Iowa Saturday, March 5th. Meteorologist Brad Small says that's the count so far, noting more could be added as additional information is received.

The largest of the twisters was rated an EF-4, with maximum sustained winds of 170-miles per hour. That twister (Twister #1) impacted Madison, Warren, Polk, and Jasper County. Small says it was not an EF-4 for the entire 70-mile path, but they base their ratings on the damage along the path.

Tornado #2 was the Garden Grove/Humeston tornado. The NWS says it touched down at 5:07 p.m. and was on the ground for 19-miles until 5:34 p.m. The tornado was rated an EF-2, with maximum winds of 122-miles per hour. The NWS says it formed northeast of Leon and traveled to the northeast to near Garden Grove and ended northeast of Derby in Lucas County.

Tornado #3 was Chariton/Red Haw State Park tornado. The NWS says it occurred between 5:30 p.m. and 5:54 p.m. Top winds were 134-miles per hour, and it traveled for 16 miles, directly through Red Haw State Park, where there was one fatality.
