(Des Moines, IA) -- Insurance adjusters have been busy adding up damage from Saturday's severe weather and tornados in Iowa. The tornado proved deadly, claiming seven lives in Lucas and Madison counties. Multiple tornados Saturday damaged or destroyed dozens of homes.

Shannan Cragg, Vice President Personal Lines Claims for Nationwide Insurance says adjusters have been busy dealing with claims in Iowa. The Ohio-based company has a large presence in the Des Moines, with more than 3,000 employees. She reminds homeowners that even if there wasn't obvious damage, they should do a quick check of their property just in case. She also reminds homeowners to always hire a reputable company to fix damage.

Cragg says we never think a disaster will happen to us, but to be prepared it's a good idea to document your belongings. She says even pictures of possessions inside your home and outside will help in the event an adjuster needs to visit after a disaster and start the claims process.

The Iowa Insurance Division also has a Post-Disaster Claim Guide.

Ten counties are under a state disaster declaration. Those counties include: Adair, Benton, Decatur, Jasper, Lucas, Madison, Polk, Tama, Warren, and Wayne counties.

The proclamation activates the Individual Assistant Grant Program for qualifying residents, along with state resources for counties.
