(Lucas County, IA) -- Clean-up continues at Red Haw State Park, which took a direct hit from a damaging tornado March 5th.
Chad Kelchen, District 4 Park Supervisor says the storm cause extensive damage at the park near Chariton in Luas County. He says many high winds stripped many branches off mature oak trees, which now look more like utility poles. He says the campground will likely be closed most of the year.
A volunteer clean up day will be held March 27th, from 1-4 p.m.
Volunteers can help remove downed branches and small debris from the picnic and beach areas, the dam and east trail. Debris includes boards with nails, roofing materials, insulation and pieces of metal.
Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, closed toe shoes (hiking boots preferable), a water bottle, clothing appropriate for the activity, and plan to meet at the park office.
Rain date will be April 3. For questions, contact Red Haw State Park at 641-774-5632.
The campground and trail system remain closed.
