Man Facing Charges After Standoff With Cedar Rapids PD

(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- Cedar Rapids Police say 36-year-old Leo W. Bushnell, has been arrested on multiple charges including: Assault On A Peace Officer (two counts), Criminal Mischief 2nd degree, and Possession of an Incendiary Device.

Police say officers were following up on previous calls for service in the 1500 block of Second Avenue SE, when an officer was nearly-missed by a projectile from a pellet or BB-gun. The source of the shot was traced to a nearby home and the occupant refused officers’ requests to answer the door.

Police Bushnell refused to surrender so the CRPD’s Special Response Team was called to the location.

A search warrant was executed and forced entry was made into the home. Mr. Bushnell fired a shot from a BB or pellet gun and struck an officer in the hand during the entry procedure. SRT members deployed less-than-lethal munitions to subdue Mr. Bushnell, who was taken into custody.

Police seized several BB-guns and pellet guns including a model capable of firing .22 caliber projectiles. Further charges are expected in the coming days related to recent calls for service in the area.

There is an active, ongoing investigation.
