Traffic Turkeys Trot Thru West Des Moines

Photo: West Des Moines Police Department

(West Des Moines, IA) -- West Des Moines Police have had to contend with some real turkeys in traffic lately, on Buffalo Road between 73rd Street and 22nd Street.

Police posted this picture on the department's Facebook page, stating officers have officially cited and released the turkeys, but also listed some Turkey Tips: for drivers who might encounter the wild birds.

1. If they're acting aggressive or coming towards you, the Iowa DNR recommends waving your hands or whistling.

2. Don't feed them!

3. Don't slow down or stop your car! (If they see their reflection in your car, they think it is an opposing turkey and will start to peck or attack your car)

4. Don't pet them!

We have been in contact with the Iowa DNR and are well aware of the turkeys living in this area, please don't call 911 in reference to the turkeys.
