WWII Era Destroyer Named After Iowa's Sullivans Taking On Water

(Buffalo, NY) -- A World War Two-era naval warship named after Iowa's Sullivan brothers is taking on water. There are reports from Buffalo, New York that crews are trying to pump water out the U-S-S The Sullivans. The ship was named after the five Sullivan brothers from Waterloo. The brothers served and died together in World War Two. The decommissioned destroyer has been docked at a Naval and Military Park in Buffalo.

A statement from the Buffalo and Erie County Naval Park states for the past year, efforts have been underway to preserve and repair the destroyer. Divers last summer began using a Navy-approved two part epoxy, but once the water temperature dropped below 54 degrees they had to pause for the winter. The plan is still for that work to resume once the temperature increases.

The Park states the breach that occurred Wednesday is a new issue and they are working to address it.
