(Des Moines, IA) -- A horse owned by several Iowans is emerging as a favorite for the upcoming Kentucky Derby. Des Moines Attorney Jerry Crawford, who is also CEO of Donegal Racing is one of several Iowans with a stake in the three-year-old horse, "Mo Donegal."

Crawford says the agile, athletic horse is well-suited and prepared for the heavy traffic of the Kentucky Derby, which features a field of 20 horses.

“A recent article said that he has the fastest closing fractions in the country by quite some margin,” Crawford notes. “At Aqueduct, he closed 12 lengths. No other horse did that in any race on that track, while we were there. I’m optimistic for the mile and a quarter on May 7th.”

In addition to Crawford and his wife, Linda; other Iowa owners of Mo Donagal include George Cataldo, Cliff Gold, Bill and Katie Jacobson, Aaron Kennedy, Gary and Sue Kirke, Tim Kirke, Rick and Brenda Olsen, Steve and Vickie Sukup and Jackie Zachmeyer. Conor Crawford serves as Donegal’s COO.

“With Mo Donegal, Iowa is well-represented in the Derby,” Crawford says. Post time for the 2022 Kentucky Derby is 5:57 p.m. CDT on Saturday, May 7, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
