(Ames, IA) -- Iowa State University is expecting about a thousand more students to attend graduation ceremonies this spring than normal. I-S-U says 5,039 students are completing degrees from Iowa State this semester. Graduation events begin this (Thursday) night with the Graduate College,. More than 500 master's and doctoral degree candidates will be recognized. The largest number of students, 4,274 are bachelor's degree recipients. I-S-U is estimating about 80-percent of those students will attend commencement.

ISU will host three ceremonies Saturday, May 14th for undergrads at Hilton Coliseum.

University registrar Jennifer Suchan says even before the pandemic, the participation percentages were rising. "What I think we're seeing this spring is a function of the disruption of the last two and a half years. People want to celebrate, they want something joyous to come together for. The past few years have given people a different perspective on these milestone events in life."

Each ceremony will honor the graduates of two academic colleges:

  • 9 a.m., Ivy College of Business, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • 2:30 p.m., College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Engineering
  • 6:30 p.m., College of Design, College of Human Sciences
