Iowa Traffic Volume Dips Amid Rising Gas Prices

(Undated) -- The volume of traffic on Iowa highways dipped two-percent in April, after trending upward post-pandemic. Stu Anderson of the Iowa Department of Transportation says higher gas prices likely are a factor for the decrease in traffic. He says volume in May was normal, but he says that number may have been influenced by the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend. The DOT will have numbers for June in early July.

Anderson says there was a similar trend in 2008 and 2009 when gas prices spiked. He says it's possible this time volume declines will not seem as steep because many Iowans are still working from home due to pandemic work policies.
