(Mahaska County, IA) -- An Oskaloosa man is okay after being rescued from the Des Moines River in southwest Mahaska County. Bystanders called 9-1-1 after seeing a canoe and personal items floating in the water around 7 o'clock last (Tuesday) night. Rescue crews then found the 71-year-old man in the river, in the 13-hundred block of River Road. The Sheriff's Office credit the man's wearing of a life-jacket for saving his life. He was taken to a local hospital to be checked out. The Sheriff's Office says it's believed the man's canoe capsized earlier in the afternoon in Marion County.
