Fourth case of monkey pox reported in Douglas County

(Douglas County, NE) -- A fourth suspected case of the monkey pox virus is being investigated by the Douglas County Health Department.

The health department says contact tracing is underway. DCHD says they will not be releasing any additional details at this time on this individual as a matter of protecting their privacy.

The World Health Organization has declared monkey pox a Global Health Emergency. DCHD believes the risk to the public remains low, but anyone with a characteristic monkey pox rash that looks like pimples or blisters should contact a healthcare provider. If a person does not have a healthcare provider, they should call the Health Department at (402) 444-3400.

The health department says the disease sometimes starts with a fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and exhaustion. The incubation period generally is one to two weeks but can range from five days to three weeks.
