(Des Moines, IA) -- A man hurt in a motorcycle crash last weekend in Des Moines has died. Police say 26-year-old Bryton Tichy of Cedar Falls lost control of his motorcycle around 3:30 Saturday morning, near 2nd Avenue and Laurel Street, north of downtown Des Moines. He died at MercyOne Hospital last night.

First responders found Tichy, unconscious and critically injured, and transported him to MercyOne Hospital.

Police say witnesses said the motorcycle was traveling southbound on 2nd Avenue at a high-rate of speed. Preliminary examination of scene evidence indicates that the motorcycle was on its side as it entered the curve near Laurel Street, and slid into the east curb. The significant contributing factors to this case appear to be excessive speed and failure to maintain control.

It's the 12th traffic-related fatality in Des Moines this year, and the 5th involving a motorcycle.
