(West Des Moines, IA) -- The Salvation Army in Des Moines says someone dropped off a rare, valuable coin in one of their Red Kettles. The $50, 1983 gold Canadian Elizabeth II coin was found in the kettle at Scheels in Jordan Creek Town Center. The coin is valued at 18-hundred dollars. The Salvation Army posted pictures on social media, along with this message:
This is a sign that people in our community continue to open their hearts and give in a variety of ways and means and we are so grateful
Major Butch Frost of the Salvation Army in Des Moines tells WHO Radio News their fundraising goal this Christmas season is $1.3 million. Frost says funds help sustain their many programs supporting needy individuals and families. He says it also supports the Salvation Army's mobile social services center, which provides food, personal items, and social services. The vehicle travels to Story, Dallas, Warren, and Polk County. He says their food pantries have seen a soaring increase this year, along with greater demand for rent and utility assistance.
Frost says they're still looking for volunteers to donate or ring the bells.
