Iowa National Guard Helps with Southeast Relief

(Des Moines, IA) -- Seven Iowa Army National Guard soldiers are in North Carolina delivering much-needed supplies.

The Iowa National Guard says thus far they've delivered 12,500 pounds of food and water to the small community of Glenville, North Carolina. On Monday, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds authorized the deployment of an Iowa Army National Guard helicopter and crew and along with a swift water rescue team. The Guard members will be deployed until at least next Tuesday, October 8th.

Jackie Schmillen, Iowa National Guard, Director of Public Affairs, says it's due to dangerous conditions in that area of far western North Carolina. "We are helping to deliver essential items like food and water to communities completely surrounded in water because the roads are submerged," Schmillen said in an email to WHO Radio.

She says the Iowa National Guard air wing in Johnston is on standby for further relief, if ordered.
