(Linn County, IA) -- Voters in Linn County are sending the first transgender woman to the Iowa House.

Hiawatha City Council member and Democratic candidate Aime Wichtendahl won the open seat in District 80.

Wichtendahl won the District by 5-percent over Republican John Thompson.

She was elected to one of three seats on Hiawatha's City Council in 2015 and was re-elected twice in 2019 and 2023.

Democratic Representative Art Staed vacated the District 80 seat to run for an open Iowa Senate seat representing District 40 — which he won.
