Polk County Emergency Management is activating its Extreme Temperature plan on Friday with colder weather arriving across the area.

Activation criteria for the plan includes one of three scenarios:

  • 0 degrees (wind chill) for three or more consecutive days OR
  • 5 degrees (wind chill) for two or more consecutive days OR
  • 0 degrees (wind chill) for one or more days

The plan includes weather amnesty at area homeless shelters, opens warming centers, and provides free rides on DART to those locations.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines forecasts some of the low temperatures falling into the teens starting on Thursday night, and through at least Monday night.
