DSM International Airport Closed On One Of Busiest Travel Days

(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines International Airport remains closed after a Delta plane slid off the runway. Approximately 10pm on Saturday Delta 5087 was arriving from Detroit during the winter storm. Temperatures were in the 20s, with blowing snow and wind. No passengers were injured.  The flight took off from Detroit at 7:44pm EST. Authorities with the National Transportation Safety Board a re on the scene.

"We are aware and collecting information but have not opened an investigation at this time," Sarah Taylor Sulick, NTSB Public Affairs Specialist

Sarah Hoodjer, DSM Airport tells NewsRadio 1040 WHO, "The aircraft remains on pavement at this time and will be moved once it is formally released by the National Transportation Safety Board." The airport may re-open mid morning. The closure could affect thousands of travelers trying to get home after the holiday. The Federal Aviation Administration says this is one of the busiest Thanksgivings in 15 years.
