(Iowa) -- The snowstorm that hit Iowa disrupted travel over the weekend and Monday morning.

Over 800 snowplows spent the weekend clearing the roads across Iowa after a winter storm dropped a foot or more of snow in parts of the state.

But they aren't done yet, with more snow expected Monday across the state.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines says the metro received 10.9 inches of snow between Friday and Sunday.

Up to two more inches is predicted for Southern Iowa today while Des Moines could receive an additional half inch.

Craig Bargfrede of Iowa Department of Transportation says five of the state snowplows were hit from behind this weekend by vehicles.

He cautions drivers to expect that a plow will be in a snow plume and adjust their speed and distance to avoid hitting them.

The morning commute in Central Iowa was tricky for motorists, who had to navigate icy conditions on some city streets and roads.

"This morning, I saw at numerous intersections, people coming up to stop signs, and they slide right through," said Sergeant Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol.

"You knew the stop sign was there. Try to stop a little sooner. You gotta have that mindset that those roads are slick, there's ice on those roads," Dinkla said.

The Iowa State Patrol responded to more than 800 calls during this weekend's snowstorm. 210 were for vehicle crashes, which included 20 injuries. None of the accidents involved fatalities.

Bitter temperatures are expected again on Thursday morning, when they could drop to five to ten below zero.
