Des Moines, Iowa home sales up 15 percent

It's the busy season for buying and selling homes.

Linda Westergaard of the Des Moines Area Association of Realtors says homes are selling faster, and the median price is up a little bit over last month.

Westergaard tells WHO Radio News 1,474 homes sold in May 2017 which is up 15 percent from April 2017 at 1,186 homes sold.

The median sale price increased 2 percent over April 2017.   She says it's a great time to sell a home, because the inventory is still considered tight, and there are a lot of qualified buyers, who are ready to make an offer as soon as possible.

Westergaard says "days on market"  continues a downward trend,  from 63 days in April 2017 to 55 in May 2017.  Days on market is down 41% from May of 2016.

The number of properties currently for sale has increased slightly with 3,163 active listings in the metro area. April 2017 showed 3,030 active listings and May 2016 showed 3,103 active listings.

Fifty-nine percent of homes sold in May 2017 were financed conventionally.  Fifteen percent were cash purchases and eleven percent were financed with an FHA loan.
