The Des Moines Register is reporting that former Polk County Deputy, Sgt. Dan Charleston, has been fired.
The Register quotes Polk County officials saying that Charleston was terminated Friday.
Charleston has run unsuccessfully as a Republican against Democratic Sheriff Bill McCarthy twice. He recently created controversy over remarks on his facebook page that some took as disparaging to Muslims. At the time, the Sheriff's office said they were conducting an internal investigation into the incident.
There has been no official comment from either Charleston or the Sheriff's Office.
