Apple to build $1.375 billion data center in Waukee

Apple, Inc. is coming to Waukee.

The company announced Thursday it is building two new data center buildings...an investment of $1.375 billion dollars.

The five-year project was made possible thanks to $19,650,000 in tax credits from the state and $188,239,943 in property tax abatement over 20 years from the city of Waukee.

Both the city and the state incentive packages were approved Thursday.

The facility will be built on land that was recently annexed by the city of Waukee.

It is expected to bring a thousand or more construction jobs to the area, and will create 50 jobs paying over $24 an hour.

The first building should be completed by April of 2020, the second the following April.

At a news conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the data center's future will be tied to the growth of the Apple Store and the apps that it offers.  The company says the Waukee facility will enable the company to better serve North American users of iMessage, Siri, and other Apple services as well.

In addition, Apple's donating up to $100 million to a new Public Improvement Fund in Waukee.  Officials say the first project will be to support construction of the Waukee Youth Sports Complex.
