Des Moines blood supplies low as summer begins

DES MOINES, Iowa-  Lifeserve Blood Center's hosting their annual Blood Donor Day this Thursday, June 21st, at a time when supplies are lower and demand is typically higher.     

Spokesperson Danielle West tells WHO Radio News last year they had about 500-donors and they're hoping for even more this year.

Lifeserve provides blood and blood products to 120 hospitals in 85-Iowa counties.

The locations for the blood drive this Thursday are Capital Square, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Valley West Mall in West Des Moines from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

West says they could use all types, but especially type O.

Eligible donors must be 16 or 17 years old, with parental consent, 18 or older and at least 120 pounds you can donate.   Donors must fill out a form and undergo a mini physical.
