Man, wife escape burning house in Des Moines, with burns

DES MOINES, Iowa -  A husband and wife escaped their burning home early Friday, but both have burns.

The says he man woke up to flames and smoke in the middle of the night, got his wife up and the two escaped.   

Des Moines firefighters were called to the house just before 1:00 a.m. Friday to the 800 block of 41st Street near Roosevelt High School, just across from the Des Moines Playhouse.  They worked in frigid temperatures.  

Neighbor Grant Wilson tells WHO-TV Channel 13 reporter Megan Reuther, “I got a banging on my window. Somebody was yelling, and I didn't know what it was. I came my front door, I looked outside and didn't see anything."   Wilson says he called 911.  

The couple were taken to the hospital with burns.  The house has extensive damage.
