Iowa one of 39 states with contaminated water from coal-fired power plants

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Iowa is one of 39 states that have groundwater contaminated by coal-fired power plants.

That's according to a new report from the Environmental Integrity Project and Earth Justice.

The study finds ponds and landfills used to store coal ash are not lined.

That means pollutants like cobalt, sulfate and arsenic are leaching into the ground water.

According to KCRG TV 9, the plants making the report in Iowa are:

- The Burlington Generating Station (Burlington, IA)

- The Lansing Generating Station (Lansing, IA)

- The Louisa Generating Station (Muscantine, IA)

- The Muscatine Power & Water CCR Landfill (Muscantine, IA)

- The Neal North Energy Center (Sergeant Bluff, IA)

- The Neal South Energy Center (Salix, IA)

- The Ottumwa Generating Station (Ottumwa, IA)

- The Prairie Creek Generating Station (Cedar Rapids, IA)

- The Walter Scott Jr. Energy Center (Council Bluffs, IA)
