Thousands of people gathered at a climate change rally in Iowa City Friday where 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg of Sweden was the star attraction.

Thunberg gained fame from her passionate address at the United Nation's Climate Action Summit.

Those taking part in the rally called on the University of Iowa to end coal use at its power plant, and demanded climate action from lawmakers at the state and federal level.

Governor Kim Reynolds and President Donald Trump were singled out for criticism during the rally.

Earlier, a Waterloo school teacher was put on administrative leave after responding to a tweet about Thunberg's appearance by saying, "Don't have my sniper rifle."
