DNR Investigating Petroleum Leak Into Raccoon River in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa —The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating the source of a petroleum sheen on the Raccoon River near Principal Ballpark in Des Moines.

DNR and Des Moines Public Work have traced the leakage to a storm sewer that empties into the river near the Southwest Seventh Street bridge. The source or cause of the sheen have not been found.

The city has placed booms downstream to contain the ongoing leakage, and minimize impacts to the rivers.

Canoers, kayakers and those fishing are being asked to avoid the booms and areas of the river where the sheen is visible.
