Waukee Man Suing City Over Its Mask Order

WAUKEE, Iowa - A Waukee man is suing the city over its face mask order that goes into effect Friday.

Lynn Hakenson is asking for a court order to block the mandate, saying it prevents him from traveling through the city for personal, business and religious purposes.

The city says it can't comment about ongoing litigation.

Waukee Mayor Courtney Clark announced the mask order Wednesday, which calls for face coverings at most businesses open to the public, as well as outside where social distancing is not possible.

Violation of the mask order carries a $15 fine, although police are instructed to first provide masks for people not wearing one.

Several cities and counties across Iowa have similar mask orders. Des Moines has had a mask order in place since late August which does not carry penalties.

The state has said local communities don't have legal authority to require people to wear masks.
