WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- A West Des Moines police officer is seriously hurt when a car hit his patrol vehicle during an overnight traffic stop.
Police say it happened just after midnight Sunday as Officer Jon Kaufman was sitting in his car on northbound I-35 and was hit by a car driven John Schwartz, 61, of Kellogg, Iowa.
The Iowa State Patrol says Schwartz is also hospitalized with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
The Patrol is investigating whether OWI or distracted driving led to the crash.
Schwartz has not been charged.
Kaufman has been working for the West Des Moines Police Department for about two years.
