Study: Most hospital employees' COVID exposures happened at home

(Iowa City, IA) -- A study conducted by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is supporting COVID-19 workplace mitigation efforts. Dr. Brooks Jackson says they analyzed data from nearly 1,800 employees self-reporting exposure to the virus last fall, and found 26-percent felt they were exposed the the virus at home, while just 10-percent indicated they were exposed to the virus at work.

Dr. Jackson says it's reasonable to assume the home exposure number is larger due to exposure being closer and longer. He also says they found that typically there were about four days between the time of exposure and a positive COVID test.

Dr. Jackson says it's tough to say which workplace measures may have been most effective, masks, hand sanitizing stations, social distancing and barriers, but he says it's clear the combination had a positive impact. He notes one additional benefit they noticed, just one case of the flu this season.

The study was published in the journal Microbiology & Infectious Diseases.
